Love and Ruin

Review :

5 strong stars from me...

I wasn't dying to read this book, when it first was released ...
....( not opposed to it....just didn't feel a strong pull.
Then I read a recent review ( thank you Sara)...and I knew I wanted to read this, sooner than later.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Historical Fiction...;possibility my favorite McLain book to date.....REALLY REALLY A GREAT BOOK.
.....the history about the Spanish war, and pre-WWII, passion and details about writing from two writers, ( some very thought-provoking dialogue about writing), entanglement between Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway, (diving further into the characters personalities and dispositions), the storytelling and gorgeous prose itself from McLain, the atmosphere, thoughts, emotions, and visuals I felt when in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, China, and Cuba....
And even a little dramatic humor....
Such as:
"Hello, Daughter"....( I laughed every time Ernest called Martha that)...
Or.....
"His bed was an operating table and this was heart surgery...they made love with an urgency once a day sometimes twice a day".
Still laughing....really An operating table
Or.....
"Rabbit"..../!....a pet nickname for Martha Honestly...kill me now!
What a god's awful nickname for any human being ... even funnier when the woman is strong, ambitious, and 'mostly' independent and secure with herself.

...Fact is......Martha Gellhorn shines in this novel!
....The HISTORY of horrific chaos.... and the history of Ernest and Martha was fascinating - ( a very enjoyable way to learn -but from a skillful Historical Fiction writer)...
Kudos to Paula McLain! GREAT JOB!!!
